Churchill Downs Says There Is No Re-Entry Into the Parking Lots

Derby is a parking problem, not a camping one

Every other event on this site sells camping. Churchill Downs sells parking, at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium, and guests walk to the track from there. There is no infield RV campground to book and no hookup tier to choose.

That reframes what an RV is for at the Derby. It is not accommodation adjacent to the action, it is a private, climate-controlled base with its own bathroom, parked at a stadium a walk away from the gates. Whether that base is available to you during the day is the question the rest of this page turns on.

An RV is 3.75 times the car rate and a bus is five times it. Those are among the few genuinely published figures in this whole category, and they are worth using: for a group arriving in three cars, one coach at $150 against three cars at $40 each is close to a wash on parking alone.

The sentence to resolve before you plan the day

Churchill Downs states, twice and plainly: "No re-entry if you exit," and "There is no re-entry into the parking lots."

What that means for someone walking back on foot to their own parked coach during the day is not something the page we read resolves. It may be aimed at vehicles driving out and returning. It may be broader.

Buy the pass for the vehicle you are actually bringing

Churchill Downs is unusually blunt here: "Passes are vehicle-specific (car, limo, mini-bus, motor coach). Incorrect vehicle types will be turned away." The same page repeats it: "Wrong vehicle types will be denied entry."

Note the categories. They are not sized by length, they are named by type, and a motor coach pass is a different product from a mini-bus pass. If your unit changes between booking and Derby Week, which happens more often than people expect on hospitality jobs, the pass has to change with it.

This is the same failure mode we found at SoFi, where oversized vehicles "without proper credentials will be redirected off-site." Being turned away is not a fine or a worse spot, it is the asset never arriving.

What most people get wrong: the bag policy is smaller than a shoebox

Each guest is permitted one bag no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches during Derby Week. Boxed lunches and food are permitted within the same limit, in clear plastic bags or containers. All patrons pass through metal detector scans.

Also prohibited: weapons of any kind, projectile items, and seat cushions larger than 15 by 15 inches that contain metal arms or backs, zippers, pockets or flaps. That last one is oddly specific and catches a lot of ordinary stadium cushions.

Set that against the re-entry question and the shape of the day becomes clear. If the coach is unreachable from the moment you walk to the track, then a 12 by 6 by 12 inch bag is the entire kit for a very long day in Louisville in early May.

The dates and what opens when

The 153rd Kentucky Derby runs Saturday, May 1, 2027, with the Kentucky Oaks the previous day, Friday April 30. Paid parking at L&N Stadium begins on Thurby, the Thursday of Derby Week.

Because parking opens Thursday and the Derby is Saturday, a hospitality plan spanning the full week needs somewhere for the coach to sleep before Thursday. Churchill Downs does not publish an overnight camping product, so that is an off-site arrangement to make separately, in the same way a Super Bowl deployment needs staging either side of the game day.

Plan it in this order

1. Ask Churchill Downs directly whether you may return on foot to a parked vehicle during the day.
2. Decide from that answer whether the coach is a day base or a night base. It changes the whole brief.
3. Buy the parking pass matching the exact vehicle type, and update it if the unit changes.
4. Arrange somewhere off-site for the coach before Thursday, since paid parking opens on Thurby.
5. Brief everyone on the 12 by 6 by 12 inch bag limit and the prohibited items before travel.
6. Buy race admission separately for every guest.
